Israel's Innovative Medical Device Industry
The Israeli medical device industry is currently considered one of the fastest growing, and most innovative in the world. Up to 70% of the 1500 life science companies operational in Israel today are medical device companies. The industry is one that is marked by innovation and leading edge technology.
Israel’s reputation for innovation is not something new. In 2019 Israel was ranked, by the Bloomberg Innovation Index, 5th out of 60 of the world’s most innovative countries. And year after year Israel leads, by population size, in terms of the highest number of patents recognized under the Patent Corporation Treaty. In terms of the highest number of medical device patents, per capita, Israel ranks number 1.
Long recognized as a dynamic, startup nation, the medical device industry within Israel is stronger and more innovative than ever before. Israel comes just 2nd to the US in terms of number of medical device companies. Life science and medical device exports from Israel were estimated, in 2018, by the Israel Export and International Cooperation Institute (IECI) to be a record $7.8 billion.
